research project SmartSolarMover – solar tracking with shape-memory alloys


photovoltaic systems are used to convert solar energy into electricity. the performance of the solar modules is directly depending on the amount of light. the latter depends directly on the orientation of the solar modules towards the sun.

in order to increase performance, electromotive tracking systems can therefore be used.
the manufacturers state increases in performance of up to 60 %. however, these servomotors show problems: due to the weather, reliability can be improved and these elements consume up to 12 % of the generated electricity.

the project

an innovative approach is chosen in the smartsolarmover project. a self-sufficient tracking unit for solar modules powered by thermal solar energy is to be developed. this system will be developed with smart materials in form of shape-memory alloys (sma) in such a way that the influences of the ambient temperatures are automatically (adaptively) compensated.

the consortium consisting of one research institute and four industrial companies from remscheid, duisburg, heiligenhaus and aachen would like to develop this development from the current state of the art at the level of precision engineering results to a holistic demonstrator (technical structure with concept and service aspects) with 2 m2 solar panel areas and build a value chain for this technology in nrw in the future.
